First rooms

A completed piece of work: rooms made fit to teach in, then handed to the program that keeps them open.

PastTwelve classrooms, finished in 2024
A bright classroom with desks facing a board.

The build that gave Open classrooms their first permanent rooms. The build is finished.

Why it is listed

A charity that only shows what is still asking for money hides the work that finished. First rooms is here because it ended, and because the classrooms people use now came from it.

What finished means

The paint is not the program. When the rooms were sound, the appeal stopped. Wages and the weekly life of the rooms moved to Open classrooms, where they can be seen on their own page.

What we would repeat

Repair before replacement. Local furniture. A handover date written down at the start, so a build does not become a permanent office for the people who arrived to do it.

Goals

  1. 01Twelve rooms repaired to a standard that could survive a wet season.
  2. 02Furniture that a school could replace locally when it broke.
  3. 03A written handover, so the build team did not remain the landlord.

Timeline

  1. 2023Surveys. Local hosts walked the rooms with us and marked what actually leaked.
  2. 2024The work. Roofs, shutters, boards, and benches. No new campuses. Existing rooms, made usable.
  3. 2024Handover. Keys and a short maintenance note passed to the open-classroom hosts. The build fund closed.

The fund is closed

This appeal has ended. Gifts now belong to the programs that grew out of the work, listed on the Give page.

How to help

This fund is closed. Gifts for classrooms now belong to Open classrooms, which keeps the rooms in use. Write if you had promised something to the build and need it redirected.
