Open classrooms

Learning held as a week, not an event: who teaches, when the door opens, and how a student comes back.

A teacher, a timetable, and a classroom that is still there the week after a student misses one.

Time, a teacher, and a classroom

Learning fails when it is only an event. The program is the ordinary structure around it: who teaches, when the school week is open, and how a student comes back after a missed week.

Not on its own

A classroom lasts longer when a meal and a community are close. Those are separate programs. A student should not have to choose between them, and should not have to explain the choice.

What the money is for

Most of the fund is wages and the small repairs that keep a classroom usable. Materials are real, and they are not the point. The point is that the same adult is there on Thursday.

Goals

  1. 01Keep twelve rooms open five days a week through the school year.
  2. 02Pay teachers on the same day each month, in the place where they teach.
  3. 03Hold a seat for a student who has been away, and ask after them.

Timeline

  1. 2023Three rooms. The first classrooms opened with borrowed furniture and a timetable written on the wall.
  2. 2024A pay day. Teachers moved onto a monthly schedule, so the work no longer depended on a gift arriving in time.
  3. 2025A shared register. Absences began to be read beside the weekly table, so a missed class could be asked about in person.
  4. 2026Two more rooms. A pair of rooms is being prepared for the next term. The fund on this page includes that work.

The fund

$612,000 raised of $900,000 goal Illustrative

The fund pays for time more than for things: a teacher’s month, chalk and paper, and the small repairs that keep a classroom usable after the rains. A gift here is attached to a register, not to a single afternoon.

How to help

A gift toward Open classrooms keeps a teacher paid and a door on its usual hours. Write to us and we will say which part of the fund a gift can be attached to.
