The evening register

Nairobi, before the first termIllustrative narrative
A person writing notes in an open notebook.
We will not print a start date until the wages are real.

After the day job

The request did not come from a survey. It came from adults who already use the building, and who cannot be in a classroom at ten in the morning. They named the evenings that would work. The list is in a notebook in the hall.

What is still missing

Teachers who can stay, and a way to pay them for the evening without taking the money from the daytime classrooms. Lamps. A second blackboard. None of this is mysterious. It is why the fund is still a seed.

A standard, moved

The evening class will be smaller, and it will move more slowly. It will not be a lesser version. A person who misses a fortnight will be shown where the work has gone, and invited to continue.

Until then

The notebook stays in the hall. When the term is funded, enrolment will happen there, in person, on a published night. This story is the waiting, written so the waiting is visible.

These narratives are written for the demonstration. They describe the kind of work Aleria is built to hold. Names are composite. They are not case studies of real individuals.
